Brief Conversations Using Motivational Interviewing Techniques for the Primary Care Provider

Overview

Video #1:

Evoking Commitment to Change (5 minutes)

In this video clip, the Physician works together with the patient to develop a specific focus.  The provider does this by asking open-ended questions, providing affirmation, using reflective listening and summarizing for the patients (OARS).  He also helps the patient to scale the importance of the issue and the patient’s confidence level for change behavior.

Video #2:

Adolescent Follow Up on Positive Alcohol Screen (3 minutes)

In this video clip, the adolescent patient has screened positive for alcohol use and the Medical Assistant works together with him to identify his risk for alcohol abuse by using permission and affirmation.

Video #3:

Linking Behaviors (4 minutes)

In this video clip we meet a patient who has just been screened as “at risk” for alcohol use and pregnancy.  You will see the Nurse working together with the patient to both link the two behaviors and use the patient’s responses to her assessment to elicit change talk and action planning toward change behavior.
