Background
According to the 2006 Partnership for Prevention study on effective clinical preventive services, tobacco cessation intervention (screening patients to determine if they smoke, providing brief counseling, and offering therapies and referrals to help them quit) is one of the three most important and cost-effective preventive services that can be offered in medical practice. Yet, 65 percent of adults have not received this service as it is recommended, regardless of the overwhelming cost savings.
In 2006, the Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative (CCGC) was awarded a contract from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP) to administer grants and provide training and technical assistance to health care organizations to address the clinical guideline for tobacco use and dependence.
Funding Goals
The grants program is intended to support STEPP’s strategic program goals regarding helping people who use tobacco to quit, and reducing the exposure of secondhand smoke. Specifically, this program focuses on increasing the number of healthcare settings that utilize the CCGC Guideline for Tobacco Cessation and Secondhand Smoke Exposure with their patients. Download the Tobacco Cessation and Secondhand Smoke Exposure guideline.
Funds are intended to assist healthcare organizations in integrating the clinical guideline into their systems so that addressing tobacco with patients occurs routinely and systematically.
How We Fund
CCGC asks for proposals through a Request for Proposal process, rather than accepting unsolicited proposals. Announcements of Requests for Proposals are posted on our website. CCGC only funds programs in Colorado communities.

Funded Projects
In 2006, the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP) awarded a contract to the Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative (CCGC) to serve as a lead agency for tobacco cessation education and systems change in healthcare in Colorado. One of the key roles that CCGC plays in this capacity is to make grants and provide technical assistance to healthcare organizations to implement the clinical guideline on smoking cessation and secondhand smoke exposure into healthcare settings. The following is a summary of the work accomplished by grantees to date and their plans for 2007. Click on a grantee below to read more about their project.
