Integrating Tobacco Cessation in Clinical Practice:
Tobacco Rapid Improvement Activity (TRIA)

The Colorado Clinical Guideline Collaborative (CCGC), with grant funding from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, works to help healthcare providers to help their patients break the addiction to tobacco.  Through our Tobacco Rapid Improvement Activity (TRIA) training, CCGC’s experienced quality improvement coaches share the latest tobacco research with healthcare providers and work with them to incorporate tobacco cessation treatment into standard care at hospitals, clinics and healthcare practices.  Our current focus is working with practices that serve primarily low-income patients and pregnant women.

As a result of the TRIA training, clinicians are encouraged to ask about tobacco use at every visit, advise them to quit, prescribe medications to assist with quitting and refer to programs that provide counseling, such as the Colorado QuitLine.  These best practices are based on the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline:  Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, the international standard for helping people quit.  To date, the CCGC Tobacco Program has trained more than 4,000 healthcare providers at more than 260 clinics and organizations throughout the state.
